Can You Walk On Water? Neither Could Peter!
Prophecy Chat by Sharon L. Clemens

Special note: all specific scriptures referenced below are linked to BibleGateway.com, making your study easier.

I am indebted to the Apostle Peter. He is a perfect example of believers who blow it--not once, but several times. But, our Lord's mercy restored him each time he fell, and repented. Peter lived to bear much fruit in the Kingdom of God.

A favorite Bible story is of Jesus, walking on the water, and Peter's less-than-stellar attempts to do so as well. But the story is not about Peter's attempts to share in Christ's miracle; it is about what happens when believers fail. We all do it. As they say, the Lord may be leading but "we didn't get that memo." Something got in the way: disobedience, a failure to read His Word and pray on a regular basis, worldly distractions. The list of rationalizations is endless, but the results are always the same. The storm came, and we took our eyes off Jesus.

Matthew 14:25-33

"Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea...And Peter answered Him [Christ] and said, 'Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.' So He [the Lord] said, 'Come.' And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. BUT WHEN HE SAW THAT THE WIND WAS BOISTEROUS, HE WAS AFRAID; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, 'Lord, save me!. And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, 'O you of little faith, why did you doubt?' And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased."

     * The disciples were in a small boat on the Sea of Galilee. A strong wind came up--a "contrary" wind that was not cooperating with where the disciples wanted to go. As they struggled with the wind, the Lord came to them walking on the water. Note that it was the fourth watch of the night--that portion of the night from 3:00 to 6:00 a.m. This is the darkest part of the night, right before the dawn. It is when the storms of life take us to the darkest depths of the struggle that we begin to take our eyes off Christ.
     * I give Peter credit for his spontaneous boldness. He often responded first, and with enthusiasm while the others held back. The rest stayed safely in the boat, but Peter said, "Lord if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." Peter took the opportunity to exhibit great faith in the face of adversity.
     * Note also that Peter did not presume on our Lord. He asked permission to come to Him on the water. We do not accomplish great things for God through our own strength; we are completely dependent on Him and His purpose. It doesn't work to step out when the Lord is not leading in that direction. John 15:5--"...He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without me you can do nothing." It is for His glory, not our own, that He allows great works. We must be sure we are operating on His orders, not our own will.
     * Peter got out of the boat and headed toward Jesus. But, he made a fatal error--he started watching the wind and waves instead of Christ. The circumstances of the storm began to sink him! Peter was a great starter; it was finishing he had some trouble with. But as he sank, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
     * Good answer, Peter. IMMEDIATELY Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him. But Christ chided Peter for missing his moment. His lack of faith caused Peter to doubt.
When we get out of the boat and step out in faith, fear can sink us, if we let it. Fear is not of God.
When they got into the boat, Peter now clinging to our Lord's arm, the wind ceased. The storm accomplished the purpose for which our Lord sent it--to demonstrate our dependence on Christ, alone.
All storms will end. How we weather the storm depends on our faith to "walk on water."
In Christ Jesus, we are able to walk above our circumstances, no matter what the storm.
He makes a path through all sorrow--He can even make stormy water firm enough to walk on.

[Romans 8:35-39]
"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
...Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,
nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing,
shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

THE STORMS ARE COMING--Will We Sink, Or Stand!

With dark clouds brewing over the nations of man, it is a good reminder that in Christ Jesus, we can ride out the waves. There is an image in the heavenly throne room of God that comforts me. In Revelation 4 and 5, the war room of God is described in glorious detail. This "room" is command central during the Tribulation. The believers raptured before the Tribulation are there, around the throne, represented by the twenty-four elders [4:10; 5:8-10]. And before the throne, separating the multitudes of heavenly redeemed from the exalted throne of the Lord God Almighty, is "a sea of glass, like crystal." This "sea" is solid, but transparent. Those who approach the throne walk on this crystal sea into the holy presence of God. In heaven, we will all walk on water like a crystal sea, because the storms of life are no longer present. We will exist in the holy presence of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit for all eternity.

Only through Christ Jesus do we gain access to that throne. As the elders sing, "You [the Lamb] are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation..." This is the redeemed church in heaven, cleansed by the blood of the Lamb. [5:8-10]

Let us keep our eyes on Jesus, maintaining our walk of faith EVEN THROUGH THE STORMS, and waiting with anticipation for His return to "receive [us] to Himself." [John 14:3] Come, Lord Jesus!

In Him We Wait, Work, and Watch,
[Luke 12:35-59]

"The Truth Make-over"
Prophecy Chat by Sharon L. Clemens

Recently, we left our church of 26 years. We were active members of this church, but finally were compelled to leave because the Bible is not being taught literally. What do I mean by a literal interpretation of the Bible? It is also called expositional teaching--the presentation of the Word line by line and verse by verse, in its proper context. This method of teaching interprets the Bible primarily at face value, rather than merely expounding on an obscure application with no substance. A basic rule of Bible interpretation is "When the literal sense makes perfect sense, seek no other sense."

The loss of our home church especially troubled my husband and I because we also were led to leave the denomination we were raised in after we received Christ as Lord and Savior. That was many years ago, but the Holy Spirit made it clear we had no choice; the Word was not being taught honestly. However, the seminary-trained pastors in that denomination seemed oblivious to the fact that they took scripture out of context and ignored prophetic portions because a literal interpretation would expose the error of their denominational position. The pastors had been trained to "spiritualize" scripture, making the literal meaning into a symbol of something else. It has been called Little Red Riding Hood preaching. For Sunday after Sunday, during my childhood, I would sit in a pew and listen to the senior pastor expound on a Bible passage--not teaching it in context, but lifting out a shallow point of morality, launching into a fairytale-like story to illustrate his point--a story with little relationship to the text. He needed to create interesting stories in order to keep the congregation awake. You may have had similar experiences. How sad. If such preachers had actually taught the Bible, they would have found the Word of the living God is not only interesting, it is convicting power.

The issue boils down to the same question Pontius Pilot asked of Christ. What is truth? Because truth is the foundation of everything, the question is fundamental. Because there is only one truth [John 14:6], and that truth is synonymous with Jesus Christ, Satan has sought to destroy it from the beginning. How effective he is in doing so is an indication of how near the Lord's return may be. God will only allow Satan to abuse His truth for so long before His wrath will tolerate no more.

SATAN'S MAKE-OVER OF TRUTH:

Satan's tactics to pervert and subvert truth haven't changed much over the centuries; they do not have to because lost mankind falls for them every time. All Satan had to do to lure Eve into sin was to cast subtle doubt on God's intentions: "Has God indeed said..." [Genesis 3:1]. Satan is a master of DECEPTION. Deception is not all lies--that would be too obvious. Deception is a little truth with a little lie. But even a shade of a lie contaminates the purity of truth, making it into deception. All Satan had to do was to plant a seed of doubt in Eve's mind about God's intentions, and she bought it--hook, line, and sinker.

For years we reasoned it wasn't so much what the ministers were saying as what they were NOT saying. However, that pattern changed. We finally left when scripture was taken out of context, interpreted on the basis of bias rather than literal truth, and then was used to cast dispersions on those with opposing views. Our story is being repeated again and again in churches all over our country and shouldn't surprise us. But neither should we continue to sit in a church that is teaching defective truth. I pray the scales will fall from the eyes of ministers who work very hard about what NOT to say or twist what they DO say so the meaning supports their Madison Avenue mission statement instead of the Bible. The Lord is the one who will defend His truth at His return; that is why I pray for teachers and pastors who are falling into apostacy and deception [Revelation 22:18-19].

NOTHING NEW--AN EXAMPLE OF SATAN'S METHODS FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT:

In the days of the prophet Amos, he was called by God to warn Israel of coming judgment. Israel, except for the remnant of true believers, did not listen to his words. Instead, the apostate leaders accused Amos of conspiracy and treason! They questioned his motives and demanded he return home to Judah and try to sell his message there--as if Amos were in it for the money. Amos countered by pointing out that he had a prosperous business before God commanded him to go to Israel. Amos was obeying God; there was no benefit for him personally. [Amos 7:10-16]

Because Israel refused to hear the truth, the LORD took away the truth-tellers. "Behold, the days are coming,' says the Lord God, that I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread...but of hearing the words of the LORD...They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the LORD, but shall not find it." [Amos 8:11-12]

IN OUR DAY, TRUTH-TELLERS ARE BECOMING FEW AND FAR BETWEEN.
TRUE BELIEVERS ARE SEARCHING FOR CHURCHES TEACHING THE WHOLE TRUTH--AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH--OF THE BIBLE.

Just as the Lord took away the word of the Lord from Israel, so He is allowing Satan to deceive and corrupt God's Word today. As Isaiah warned, immorality is being legalized in our courts so that "evil shall be good and good, evil" [Isaiah 5:18-20]. Hate Crimes legislation threatens to repress the truth by making scriptural truth illegal in the public arena. Daniel 7:25 predicted a time when Antichrist would change times and laws to fit his demonic agenda.

IF SIN HAS ITS WAY, THE UNITED STATES WILL LEGISLATE FREEDOM FROM RELIGION, RATHER THAN FREEDOM OF RELIGION.

SIN SEEMS TO BE WINNING--BUT THAT'S PART OF GOD'S PLAN:

Sin will have its day; it is called The Tribulation. But the darkness that the Lord is allowing to fall upon the Day of Man will be eclipsed at the Day of the Lord by the return of Christ Jesus. Our Lord is coming to "repay with tribulation those who trouble [us], and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed." [2 Thess 1:6-10]

The Lord will come in wrath and vengeance to RESTORE TRUTH and punish those who deceive. The lost are also self-deceived, thinking their manipulation of truth is bringing world peace and global Christianity to a deteriorating world. But they are wrong. "For when they say, 'Peace and safety!' then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape." Paul likens the self-deceived to those in darkness while the believers are walking in the light of God's truth. "But you brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief." What are believers to do in days of deception? "Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober...putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. FOR GOD DID NOT APPOINT US TO WRATH, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ..." [1 Thess. 5:3-9]

The great irony of this onslaught of LIES and the perversion of truth is that because of the attack on God's truth, the Lord will TRAP THEM with their own lies:

THE DECEIVERS WILL BE DECEIVED!

"The coming of the lawless one [Antichrist] is according to the working of Satan,
with all power, signs, and lying wonders,
and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish,
because THEY DID NOT RECEIVE THE LOVE OF THE TRUTH, that they might be saved.
And for this reason GOD WILL SEND THEM STRONG DELUSION, THAT THEY SHOULD BELIEVE THE LIE,
that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness."
[2 Thess. 2:9-12]

Let the punishment fit the crime. The Lord's justice and righteousness is perfect in its application. [Obadiah 15]. We have nothing to fear, but must occupy until He comes.

In Him We Wait, Work, and Watch,

Day In and Day Out! In Him, We Wait, Work, and Watch "Part II"
Prophecy Chat by Sharon L. Clemens

In Part I, the differences between Kingdom Now and Dispensationalism were compared. As a dispensational teacher of prophecy, I must give an account of the hope I have, which is also the hope of Christ's imminent return. Often, those who criticize this expectation say that waiting around for the return of the Lord means dispensationalists are not working for the cause of Christ. The world must be evangelized, they say, according to the Great Commission, before the Lord can return. I believe this is a mis-interpretation of the Great Commission. Also, a true believer filled with the Holy Spirit cannot help but work or produce fruit. Let me break down these issues:

IS THE CHURCH GOING TO EVANGELIZE THE WORLD?

What is that about? Is the Church going to evangelize the world? Yes, we are told to witness, disciple, and work in Matthew 28. Why KN advocates believe those who study prophecy do not do that is frustrating to me. But I also understand from the Bible that it is the Holy Spirit that brings in the harvest. We are merely tools. John 15:1-11 tells us that we are to bear fruit for God's glory. In that way, whether our witness brings someone to Christ--or NOT, God is glorified. It is about the attitude of the worker toward God, not the results. All self-less work of believing Christians brings glory to God. It is up to the divine election by the Holy Spirit whether it will also result in someone being saved.

What the Great Commission does NOT say is that the Church will be successful in global evangelisation. We are to make disciples "of" all nations; this does not mean everyone in all the nations is saved. The Bible only speaks of a remnant of believers "of" every nation, tribe and tongue.

I see this as a key point of disagreement between the D camp and the KN camp: THE WORLD WILL NOT BE "CHRISTIAN" WHEN THE LORD RETURNS. We are already being called a post-Christian culture in this nation and things are getting worse, not better, as the Lord predicted. Just as the Jews of the Old Testament failed, for the most part, to take the truth of God to the world, so the Church will also be less than successful. Only a remnant of believers is saved in any age. This remnant is always very small in comparison with the whole. The remnant is referred to in the Bible in numerous places and is called "the few" in the New Testament:

      1. Luke 18:8--Our Lord said, "Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?" This is a rhetorical question; the answer is "no." According to the description of the last church age in Revelation 3:14-22, the "church" will be so lukewarm and compromising when the Lord comes for His Bride, the true believers, that He will vomit it out of His mouth. The organized church will make Him sick.
      2. Matthew 7:14--"Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are FEW who find it.
      3. Matthew 20:16--"So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen." NKJ [This verse is omitted in some translations.]
      4. Matthew 22:14--"For many are called, but FEW are chosen." NKJ
      5. Luke 13:23--"Then one said to Him, "Lord, are there few who are saved? And He said to them, 'Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able."

How sad to believe that the world will become Christian, if "we" just work hard enough. Rather, we are saved by grace, through faith, in Jesus Christ--not of works. Salvation is the gift of God through the Holy Spirit. We are His workmanship, a precious remnant to display His grace in every age, prepared BY HIM before time began [Ephesians 2:8-10]. What pride on the part of men to think their global unification/ecumenical/common ground/easy believisim is justified if it "wins the world for Christ." Rather, it will send multitudes to Hell who believed they were saved--and they were not.

Doctrine and truth are being compromised and even ignored as "judgmental" and "divisive" in order to get more numbers into the Kingdom--all for the righteous cause of "winning the world for Christ." Matthew 25:11--"Lord, Lord, open to us! But he answered and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.'" Matthew 7:21-22--"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'"

If it is the Church that saves the world, where is the glory to God? Rather, Christ will return to take His creation back by force. He will also use Israel in the final stages of His plan of the ages, not the Church. The Church, because we are saved by the blood of the lamb, need not go through the Tribulation of His wrath [1 Thess. 5:9]. God will finish His plan by grafting Israel back into His focus [Romans 11]. Because there is now no condemnation or judgment that holds a believer in the Church accountable--not because of our merit but because of the justification we have in Christ--we will not go through the judgment of the Tribulation [Romans 8:1]. To believe we must yet suffer this time of WRATH is to say Christ did not do enough on the cross to pay our penalty for sin. It is for the sake of Christ that His bride will go home before the Tribulation, not because of any merit on our part. Praise God! And yet, how often have I been criticized for holding this hope [Titus 2:13].

HOW CAN YOU BE AGAINST GLOBAL REVIVAL?

I am not against global revival; would that it could be so! But the Bible reveals God's plan differently than the Kingdom Now advocates espouse. The closest thing to a global revival or "world" evangelism is prophesied to occur in the Tribulation--in that book that KN advocates ignore for the most part. Revelation 14:6-7--"Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth--to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people--saying with a loud voice, 'Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water."

Note that it is an angel of God who proclaims the Gospel loud and true to the whole world in the Tribulation. Before the Lord allows the world to nearly be destroyed in the Battle of Armageddon, by His grace He makes a global proclamation of His own to bring in the elect. He doesn't "need" the Church--or Israel--to do it for Him. But we are blessed when we serve as His tools. Note also that Israel is used as His tool prior to this global proclamation of truth. Revelation 7 tells us that as a result of the witness of the 144,000 chosen and sealed Jews, men of all nations too many to number come to Christ. The greatest revival the world has ever seen occurs in the Tribulation, after the Rapture of the Church. The Church has nothing to do with it. God uses new Tribulation believers to accomplish His purpose because His bride is already taken out.

SITTING AROUND, WAITING FOR THE LORD TO RETURN?

At this point, I am sure many will rationalize their world agenda by accusing me of the same-old/same-old. "You're just waiting around for the return of the Lord and not working." I will admit I have met some Christians in classes that cling to the Rapture as an escape rather than a blessed hope. They have little fruit to show evidence of saving faith in their Christian walk. These prophecy buffs give true believers a bad name. ANY PROFESSING CHRISTIAN WHO IS NOT WORKING FOR GOD'S GLORY IS NOT A BELIEVER IN THE FIRST PLACE. The parable of the soils in Matthew 13:1-23 clearly equates true saving faith with fruitfulness. That distinction must be made when a student of prophecy is accused of "not working" just because they believe in the imminent coming of the Lord. Such a generalized accusation is tantamount to accusing me of not being a true believer in Jesus Christ.

FINALLY--TO MY POINT:

Because I tend to be long-winded so as not to be misunderstood, it requires a lot of words to GET TO THE BOTTOM LINE, but I'm finally there.

JUST BECAUSE I STUDY BIBLE PROPHECY DOESN'T MEAN I'M NOT WORKING FOR CHRIST.
JUST BECAUSE I HAVE AN ATTITUDE OF EXPECTATION FOR THE ANY-MOMENT RETURN OF CHRIST, DOESN'T MEAN I'M COMPLACENT.
IF I'M NOT WORKING, MY FAITH IS FALSE.
IF MY WORKS AND FRUITFULNESS ARE NOT PRESENT AS EVIDENCE OF MY SALVATION, THEN I AM NOT SAVED.

Rather, the HOPE I have in Christ gives me the motivation and courage, and endurance and faith TO DO HIS WORK.
IT GIVES ME THE PEACE IN THE MIDST OF THE STORM I NEED TO CONTINUE THE RACE.

My PROPHECY CHAT passage is Luke 12:35-59. Note that our Lord COMMANDS us to rise and be prepared to WORK at all times, as we wait for His return. And we are to continue WATCHING and WAITING for His any-moment return because He is not going to tell us exactly when it is going to be. Why? Because it is the attitude of preparedness and expectation He desires from us! That is why I close every chat with: "In Him We Wait, Work, and Watch."

Note also that the Lord, Himself, describes believers as those who watch, but unbelievers as those "not looking for him" [Luke 12:46].

Prophecy is also called by many DIVISIVE because there are differences in interpretation, so they refuse to teach it. Are we to avoid division over truth? NO! Our Lord did not. Luke 12:51--"Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division."

Finally, our Lord Jesus chastised the multitudes for being able to tell the weather by the signs in the sky, but paid no attention to the signs of the times revealed in the prophets. Luke 12:56--"Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time?"

We are living in interesting times. I pray for the remnant of true believers that they would be blessed with wisdom and discernment [James 1] to understand the times in which we live [Daniel 12:10], as we wait eagerly for His return.

In Him We Wait, Work, and Watch,
[Luke 12:35-59]

In Him, We Wait, Work, and Watch Part 1
Prophecy Chat by Sharon L. Clemens

I close every Prophecy Chat with the words "In Him We Wait, Work, and Watch." They are promise, comfort and motivation as we wait expectantly for the Lord's return. I chose this closing because teachers of Bible prophecy are often accused of waiting around for the Lord's return and not working for the kingdom. Just recently, I heard a pastor compare those waiting for the Lord's return with the complacent unbelievers in Amos 9:10. This accusation usually comes from those who believe that the kingdom is already here, and the church has been commissioned to convert the world to Christianity so the Lord can return. Although not all critics of dispensational teachers or prophecy students hold this view, many do, in varying degrees. Some are in the category of Kingdom Now or Dominion Theology, although they may not label themselves with those terms. Many who discredit the study of prophecy also believe in Replacement Theology--that the church has replaced Israel in God's plan and everything left in scripture is all about the Church or has already been fulfilled in the past.

In order to be ready to give a defense for the hope I have of Christ's return [1 Peter 3:15], first for His bride at the Rapture, and then at the end of the Tribulation to establish His earthly Kingdom, I try to understand the opposition I receive through the eyes of their belief system. Those who believe the Kingdom is already here, and not just in the hearts of believers as I understand it, get very upset when Christians wait eagerly for the Rapture. They think waiting for the Rapture is preventing workers from bringing more of the saved into the Kingdom. It is hard to even begin to dismantle this wrong assumption because the basis of their thinking is so skewed. But I'm going to try by going through a few points to compare Dispensationalism [in grey] with Kingdom Now [in green] To save my typing fingers, I will call the two viewpoints "D" and "KN".

      * D believes that at Christ's first coming, the Kingdom was established in the hearts of believers through the in-dwelling Holy Spirit at the point of conversion. During the Church Age, the Kingdom of God is a spiritual kingdom to which all believers in Christ Jesus automatically belong [John 3:5-8]. Therefore Christ did not assume an earthly, LITERAL throne at that time. He will do so when He returns the second time. John 18:36 -- "Jesus answered, 'My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but NOW My kingdom is not from here.'" [emphasis mine] When the Lord returns, "He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS," Revelation 19:16. Christ will return to reign for a thousand years over a literal earthly kingdom [Rev. 20:4]. To summarize: A dispensationalist does NOT believe we are "in the Kingdom now" literally. We belong to the supernatural/spiritual Kingdom of God through our spiritual re-birth at the moment of conversion, but the literal earthly Kingdom is still future.
      * KN advocates, however, believe we are "in the Kingdom now," and that this is the fullest extent to which the Kingdom will manifest itself on the earth. In general, they believe Christ will return to "receive" the Kingdom from the Church, which has succeeded in Christianizing the world. KN advocates are involved in many ecumenical programs promoting "common ground," spiritual unification, and "peace" in order to foster this belief.
      * D believe that the next global unification in God's plan is not the Kingdom of God but the final kingdom of man under Antichrist. It is the final kingdom of the Times of the Gentiles [Luke 21:24; Daniel 2]. D believes in a literal, 1,000-year Kingdom [Rev. 20:7] with Christ ruling with a rod of iron [Ps. 2; Rev. 19:15] sitting on the throne of David [Amos 9:11; Zechariah 14]. Christ will return to possess His earthly Kingdom by destroying the kingdoms of man [Daniel 2]. The Church does not make possible the Kingdom; the Father establishes the Kingdom, through the Holy Spirit, and presents it to His anointed Son, the Christ--not the Church. The final supernatural call to the Kingdom is in the Tribulation by an angel of the Lord, Revelation 14:6. Psalm 2:6, 8 -- "Yet I [the LORD] have set My King [His Anointed/Christ] on My holy hill of Zion...Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for your inheritance and the ends of the earth for Your possession." Christ will possess the earth by taking it by force at His Second Coming [Zechariah 12 and 14; Revelation 14 and 19].
      * KN believes there will be no literally manifested earthly Kingdom. They see the plan of God as extending no further into the future than the Church Age and that the Church will bring in the Kingdom so that Christ can return and "receive it" from the victorious Bride.
      * D believes that although God's plan for national Israel has been set aside for a time, Israel will be "grafted" back into His focus after the Church Age ends [Romans 11]. The Church Age will end when Christ returns to take His Bride, the Church, home at the resurrection/rapture of the Church [John 14:1-4; 1 Thess. 4:16-18; 1 Cor. 15:51-58]. Then, the Lord will continue His work through national Israel during the Tribulation and return at the end of the seven years [Matt. 24; Rev. 19]. A study of Genesis 12 and 15 reveals that the covenant God made with Abraham and his descendants is an UNCONDITIONAL covenant that cannot be broken because it is based on God's word and His good name, not on Israel's obedience. It is everlasting. Therefore, the Lord will fulfill His promises to Abraham through Israel's testing and ultimate restoration and redemption during the Tribulation [Zechariah 12:10ff, 13]. The Lord does not accomplish this to glorify Israel, but to glorify Himself by keeping His promises. The church has NOT replaced Israel; God has a plan for both the Church and for national Israel and both will be fulfilled.
      * KN believes that the commission to win the world for Christ was first given to Abraham and his people, the Jews, but they failed for the most part. At the coming of Christ and His rejection by Israel, the Great Commission fell to the Church--along with the rest of God's plan. Because the Church consists of both Jew and Gentile, they take this as the fulfillment of God's Old Testament promises to Abraham that he would be a blessing to all nations. The literal fulfillment of God's covenant promises to Abraham are then ignored or dismissed because "the Jews broke the covenant." KN believes the Church has "replaced" Israel.
      * Dispensationalism, according to Fast Facts on Bible Prophecy from A to Z, by Thomas Ice and Timothy J. Demy, is the application of basic theological tests to scriptural interpretation. The three tests are: a consistent literal interpretation; a distinction between God's plan for Israel and the church; the glory of God in a multifaceted way is the goal of history. [p. 69] Using these tests, a dispensationalist interprets the book of the Revelation and all unfulfilled prophecy in the Old and New Testaments as yet FUTURE; God's promises to both the Church and Israel will be fulfilled; all is to the glory of God, not man.
      * KN advocates rarely deal with the book of the Revelation. It is not relevant to them because they do not take it literally. A-millennialists [most main-line churches who also fall in the vague Kingdom Now camp] believe The Revelation is merely a symbolic picture of spiritual warfare--good over evil. Those who do take it literally in this camp simply replace Israel with the Church, calling the Church "spiritual Israel." Again, this is not taking it completely literally. KN's timeline ends, for all intents and purposes, at Matthew 28 with the Great Commission to the Church. They see the rest of the Bible as an expansion of the Church's mission of bringing the world into the Kingdom. In what dispensationalists see as pride, KN does not teach Bible prophecy, seeing it as "waiting around for the Lord to return and not working." They excuse these exemptions of the prophetic Word and Israel because they see themselves as doing the great work of world evangelization.
      * According to an important test of dispensationalism, dispensationalists believe that when the Bible says Israel, it is Israel; when the Bible says the Church, it is the Church. The individual plans God has for both will be completely fulfilled in God's timing.
      * Although many in the KN camp believe the Lord will return, it is AFTER the battle between good and evil is already won by the victorious Church. All Christ has to do is return and receive the Kingdom from the Church. KN advocates have been known to tell those looking eagerly for the return of the Lord that they are inhibiting the Lord's return because the Lord cannot return until the world is "Christian."

In Part II of "Wait, Work, and Watch," we come to the BOTTOM LINE of the differences between Kingdom Now and Dispensationalism. Is the Church going to evangelize the world? Are dispensationalists JUST waiting around for the Lord to return? And, are dispensationalists opposed to global revival? The answers to all these questions are approached through the Word of God--next time.

Sharon

Cyber War
Prophecy Chat by Sharon L. Clemens

The prophet Daniel was given far-reaching prophecies. He was told they would not be fulfilled in his time, but in "the time of the end" or what we call the end times. This is also what is known in prophecy as the 70th week of Daniel, the 7-year Tribulation. This last seven years is all that remains to be fulfilled of Daniel's prophecy in chapter 9.

ALL SIGNS POINT TO THE SOON FULFILLMENT OF DANIEL'S 70TH WEEK.

Our Lord warned in Matthew 24 that "the beginning of sorrows" that would precede the Tribulation would be filled with other signs such as false teachers claiming to be Christ or to be "Christian," and an increase in wars and natural disasters. It cannot be denied that such increasing signs are upon us. The last chapter of Daniel--our topic for this chat--adds more signs of the time of the end:

Daniel 12:4 -- "But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end;
many shall run to and fro,
and knowledge shall increase."

That "many shall run to and fro" has been interpreted in different ways. Could it mean that travel would increase? Or that interest in prophecy would increase, as when Jews read the Torah, their fingers quickly follow the written words back and forth from right-to-left on the page? Does it then mean that the Jews would become more interested in God's Old Testament prophecies?

The reason for this chat, however, has to do with the sign of INCREASING KNOWLEDGE. Statistically, it has been documented that more technology and knowledge of the physical world has been recorded in the last one hundred years than any other time in history. Yes, we are living in the days of unprecedented human knowledge. But I must give you yet another interpretation of the above passage. Is it to be taken together as ONE sign--that the running to and fro on the pages of scripture results in increased knowledge about scripture--and the fulfillment of the end times prophecies?

We cannot be dogmatic about the specifics of fulfillment until God fulfills prophecy, but in studying fulfilled prophecy, the Lord has a way of fulfilling His word from several different angles at the same time. It may well be that ALL OF THE ABOVE speculation could prove to be true. As man increases his human understanding of God's creation, God is bringing man closer to His return to judge and to reclaim and restore that creation. In a sense, it is a judgment against human knowledge because man tends to make human wisdom his god.

THE COMING CYBER WAR

As citizens of planet earth, we benefit from technological advances, but they will not save us in the day of judgment. Technology can be a blessing and a curse; many feel that way about computer technology. It can be used to spread the Gospel, and it can be used to pollute the mind of man. What is inescapable is that mankind is now dependent on cyber-technology to exist, and this makes us vulnerable.

A recent Reuters report, "Cyberspies Penetrate Electrical Grid: Report," reveals that cyberspies from China, Russia, and other countries, have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid. Software, left behind to be activated at a future time, was discovered that could be used to disrupt the entire system, leaving the U.S. extremely vulnerable to attack. This penetration appeared pervasive across the United States, the report states, and does not target any particular company or region. A former Department of Homeland Security also stated, "There are intrusions, and they are growing."

In addition to electrical grids, water, sewage and other infrastructure systems are also at risk. Areas of basic service that are improved by new technology make us susceptible to attack because of that same technology.

Has power grid been hacked? U.S. won't say

LOOK UP!

This report reminds us that there is no system a good cyber hacker cannot crack. Humanity is becoming too smart for our own good, if we trust in our own wisdom, instead of God. And yet, the majority of mankind will trust in themselves, instead of the Lord. As the systems of man fail, those with spiritual wisdom will be looking up, waiting in anticipation for our redemption--Christ Jesus--to return. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW PROPHECY IS FULFILLED IN BOTH A NATURAL WAY AND SPIRITUAL WAY. Our faith should be in God, completely, rather than man. Our Lord, in His mercy, is making that point. In the verses to follow, the Lord warns which "knowledge" we are to follow: man's or God's:

Daniel 12:9-10 -- "Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly;
and none of the wicked shall understand,
but the wise shall understand."

According to God's word, the only viable "wisdom" is spiritual wisdom available to believers. Human knowledge will leave unbelievers "clueless" in the end times; only wisdom which begins with a fear of the Lord will bring understanding.

In Him We Wait, Work, and Watch,
Sharon

Sharon L. Clemens and her husband, Merle, reside in Central Illinois and are members of Grace Church in Morton, Illinois, [an FEC church, The Fellowship of Evangelical Churches]. For over twenty-five years, Sharon has taught adult Christian education at Grace Church on a variety of scripture topics and books of the Bible. She has conducted non-denominational Bible studies in her home for over thirty years. Sharon received Christ as Lord and Savior at the age of twenty-three. Both she and her husband were accepted into membership at Grace Church in 1983. [Ephesians 2:8]

Sharon believes the Bible to be the inspired and inerrant Word of God, God’s revealed truth for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, which is able to thoroughly equip the Saints for service [2 Timothy 3:16-17; John 14:6]. Mrs. Clemens specializes in teaching and commentary on the prophetic Word with a concentration on Bible prophecy yet to be fulfilled. Regarding eschatology [the study of future things], she is premillennial and dispensational. Regarding the Rapture of the Church, Sharon believes the evidence of scripture points to Christ’s return in the clouds for the Church before the Tribulation [pre-trib]. [1 Thessalonians 1:10—“…and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”]

Sharon and husband Merle and their children owned and operated the Farm Grove Shops and Restaurant for thirteen years in Central Illinois and now live in their one hundred year old restored barn with their home-based collectable shop in the lower level.

Sharon appears monthly as a special feature guest on Channel 25’s “News at Noon, ” [NBC affiliate] as a craft artist. She speaks professionally on Christian topics for faith-based groups and churches and presents programs on cottage lifestyle for secular groups and organizations.
